This is directed to those Opponauts who live nearer to the equator than I do here in Columbus, OH. What are your opinions on black on black cars? I’m finding great deals on cars but they are almost always black paint with black interior. I worry about the hot summer days and trying keep my car cool even though black cars are absolutely gorgeous.
Do you go out of your way to avoid these combinations or do you have any secrets to make the warmer months not so unbearable in them?
I currently own a black car and didn’t really want another but the price differences are as high as $7000 between some black and non black models. That’s too crazy to pass up honestly.
GM performance models for your time.

Black paint is a pain in the ass to keep clean. That being said, if a black car is the shiniest car on the lot, it is REALLY clean.
You can mitigate the heat by getting tint and getting a car with AC.

I have a black on black car in Australia. Just get one with aircon and park in the shade when you can.
The worst part about black cars is keeping it clean.

Window tint is a great idea! I always forget about it but it seems like it works really well

My CTS-V is black, and I live in Tampa. You need a 160* thermostat and feel free to add heat insulation between your headliner and roof. I also lined the upper side of my sunroof’s sliding cover in shiny foil tape. These made a world of difference on 100* days. Also, you will need to run your cooling fans full time

I honestly didn’t think color would make a big difference - but it does - my current car is silver and stays quite a bit cooler than our last car which was a dark, forest green.

Not so bad if you have good car washes/detailers.

No joke, my current car almost never looks clean but when it is it does look good

Make sure you get a GOOD tint. Nothing makes a car look cheaper than a bad tint.

Good to know, I've noticed that the purplish looking ones looks extremely cheap

I wasn't aware that they did roof insulation in cars, that's a great idea. The standard V6 CTS is actually what I'm looking at, how does the interior hold up on hot days?

If you’re looking around, ask the shop to show you examples of their work. It should give you a good idea of the quality of their work

I have the beige interior, and my windows are tinted 10% with 85% on the windshield. The front most dash panel was cracked, but I wrapped it in Alcantara. I have added a cheap version of Dynamat to the trunk, rear package tray, and the headliner and it made a world of difference.

Roll those windows down when It’s not raining and get a sun shade for the windshield. Makes a load of difference so you don’t burn yourself on the interior.

I’ve owned a black on black mazda 3 for about a month and I live in northern california. Parking in the sun isn’t a problem because the A/C works really well

I don’t get what’s up with the all-black interiors in cars now. I’ve been shopping (still a month+ from pulling the trigger though), and it looks like that even when other colors are available, the only thing dealers order is black. Anything else is a special order. I don’t get it, is black really all customers want? It clearly doesn’t do anything special for resale value.

If it’s dust affecting how clean it looks. Try Gtechniq UVwash. It’s a car shampoo that provides a degree of dust protection in it’s anti-static properties (horizontal panels will show a third less dust while other surfaces will show 80% less dust) and UV protection to help prevent colour fade in the sun.

As a fellow cbus resident I never realized how easy we have it until I visited my buddy in Florida. I thought below was a joke but in the summer this could not be more accurate. But I know some will run leaner on Antifreeze since water is better at transferring heat. And windshield sun visors for both front and back will do wonders for the interior.

Singapore is perpetually between 85 and 110 and the black car NEVER feels cool enough. As much as it looks great, I’d avoid it if I could.

Cloth seats should make a big difference. My dad’s xB is dark purple (Sizzling Crimson Micah) with black cloth seats, and it feels a lot better in the summer than my mom’s green (Black Forest Pearl) RAV4 with gray leather seats. Stick to black on black, only if the seats are cloth. Cloth for the win.

I had a black on black car when I lived in Central California. On days above 100 degrees, it sucked. Steering wheel, shifter, seat belts, seats, everything burned. It was also a nightmare to keep clean.
However, it looked great!

My wife had a black on black Sunbird when we lived in Texas. That car was impossibly hot. I mitigate the heat in my old truck with a reflective sun shade and limo tint, but it is still ridiculously hot in the summer. When we bought new vehicles, we went with white and silver.

I am in the Columbus area myself and something like a sun visor can make a big difference in the summer

I use it in the summer if and when it’s really sunny (rare in the U.K.), it does the trick. It hinders the waterrepellency marginally of any coating but I ofset that with the fact there won’t be much in the form of rain anyway.

I’m in Arizona, with a black on black car. A window tint goes a long way. To be perfectly honest I think the strength of the AC is much more important than the color.

From SoCal and I only buy white cars, just like my grandfather. Even white will get sweltering, but not as bad as other colors, and especially black. Silver is popular for style reasons, but it isn’t any better than other medium shade colors.
